Airspan today revealed more about it’s trials of its small-cell AirSynergy LTE network with Virgin Media. The trials are taking place in the busy Oxford Street area on London.
The AirSynergy system uses a small form factor node for it’s LTE Base Station which makes it particularly suited to targeted population areas such as retail parks, individual office buildings and, as in this latest trial, a shopping street.
Virgin Media is providing the high capacity fibre optic network for the trial, with Airspan’s AirSynergy ‘pico’ base stations providing the kind of high speed wireless access points needed for LTE. Operating under licence from the communications regulator Ofcom, it is hoped that the trial will demonstrate the benefit from small, localised nodes in densely populated areas with the capacity to meet the demands of consumer wireless data needs as part of the overall roll-out of 4G/LTE networks in the UK.
