Various users of Facebook for Android have been reporting that the app has been trying to prompt them to apply an update (Build 141046) without going through Google Play. It seems that this happens via a notification, and if you click on it, you are taken to the Facebook app. There it allows you to directly download the latest version.
While this behaviour may cause some people to be worried, Facebook have a thread running on their forums, and while one of their product managers updated people on the fact that the update was in fact genuine. Later on the company posted:
"We’re working quickly to improve Facebook for Android and want to make sure everyone is using the best version of our app. You’ll experience these updates when you are on Wi-Fi, and they won’t rely on your data plan."
The question, which almost everyone is focussing on, is the big WHY did Facebook have to bypass Google Play. So far there is a lot of concern but no real answers!
