Oh Orange Pixel, how you do love to ravish my time. I suppose it all started back when you released Meganoid. I got somewhat hooked rather fast, and all your games since have had pretty much the same effect on me.
Even in their own words,
“Heroes of Loot is the result of many years of attempting to create the perfect dungeon game in the Orangepixel style. After each big project we started some sort of dungeon prototype, but none worked.
Until January 2013, when we started work on what has now finally turned into Heroes of Loot!
This is THE dungeon game we wanted to make: full on action, endless dungeons, random quests, and walking a fine line between dungeon-crawler and shoot-em up.”
So as you’d expect this has left me with kinda high expectations for Heros of Loot.

Heros of Loot seems to be the perfect balance of Dungeon and Roguelike games smashed together into one awesome mix. You get the whimsically random destrction of your enemies to loot their most prized possessions, whilst having all the fun of randomisation and perma death that you can handle, albeit with the ability to save a game which I find particularly useful for toilet break gaming. There are 4 different characters that you can play as, all offering different levels of strength, magic and xp. These can affect massively how you play the game. For the weaker ones, expect to do a lot of running away and hunting for health whilst shooting from a distance.

An OrangePixel game wouldn’t be right without some 8 bit graphics, and as you’d expect they are yet again very well made. The characters and enemies look pretty awesome and are very easy to tell apart, which a lot of time clearly having been put into them.
The levels are also well designed. As each map is randomly generated, your not going to see everything exactly the same, which may be where all levels seem to use the same textures - not a bad thing as it makes all enemies show nice and clear.
There are also some random cuts cents in between missions along the way. These add a bit of humour and remind me a lot Gunslugs (funny that).
Chances are that if you have played Meganoid 2, Neoteria, or many of the other Orange Pixel games, you would have noticed the incredibly catchy music. Heros of Loot is no different as Gavin Harrison has again made the music. As such you can expect the normal 8bit catchiness that you have likely come to love. (If you haven’t, you should, it is very catchy)
If you’re like me and generally suck at doing too many things at once when using the screen to game, you’re in luck. There are a grand total of 2 controls. One of which is in a fixed position, the fire button, and analogue directional control that will work anywhere you put your finger, or nose, whatever. The aiming works nicely as it aims at the closest enemy for you. Sure, this can be a pain if you’re trying to aim around a corner to get a specific monster, but it makes the game a lot quicker to pick up and play.
For those of you who care about stroking your e-peen and showing how awesome your gaming skills are, Google Play Services have been included. This means you can stack up your scores and achievements against others you stalk on Google+.
Oh, and on the off chance you seem to end up outside the playable area, just quit and go back in. I’ve had this once or twice but don’t know if it has since been patched. If you feel like cheating, just do the same if you’re about to die and hope to find health when you go back in. Not that I have tried this. Nope. Not me.
